Night Watch officer Jonathan Houghton, 61, is killed in the line of duty.

The first Boston law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty, Houghton was attacked with an axe by John Halloran, who was committing a robbery on State Street, on December 12, 1825, and died from his injuries a week later. Halloran is subsequently hanged on Boston Common.
